Where Do Your Fundraising Dollars Go?
Funds are used for a wide range of initiatives. Examples of initiatives funded in the 2016-2017 school year are provided below. Most of these initiatives continue to require funding in the coming school year.
Annex Air Conditioning
The PTA offered a donation to the BOE, which was accepted, for air conditioning and new electrical services in the seven classrooms at the Annex. This donation for the Annex will complete the air conditioning project that was started a few years ago. This initiative would not have been possible without the high level of participation and generosity from our fundraisers last year.
Cultural Arts Programs
We were able to offer continued support for the Artist-in-Residence program for each grade level in the 2016-17 school year. These programs provided students with valuable opportunities to participate in projects in art, photography, poetry and yoga with working professional artists. This program will continue to require funding in the 2017-2018 school year.
Classroom Library Investment
Thousands of books were provided to the school through your book donations, funds raised through the book sale, the Annex Readathon and gifts made by South Mountain families.
We significantly expanded our Mini-Grant Program which provides funds to teachers for use in their classrooms, books for our libraries, subscriptions to Raz-Kids and Scholastic News, classroom furniture and supplies, subsidizing class trip transportation, and financial support for in-need student expenses. We hope to continue to raise and provide funding for the various programs in the coming school year.
We supported our teachers and other school staff through Teacher Appreciation Lunches and Gifts acknowledging the good work they do with our kids every day. Staff appreciation will continue to require funding in the coming school year.
Community Building initiatives
Some funds were used for First Day Welcome Coffee, the Ice Cream Social, Fall Festival, Family Roller Staking Night, the School Fair, the School Musical, the School Yearbook, Newspaper, the various Assemblies such as Anti-Bullying, Social Justice and African Drumming etc. These initiatives will continue into the 2017-2018 school year.
Funds go towards maintaining the SMS Superstar website, the Weekly e-blasts and any necessary printing. We will continue to fund these in the 2017-2018 school year.
Ground beautification and Improvements
The outdoor classroom (a pilot project taking place at the Annex), outdoor lunch area tree planting at the Big School, bulb planting and fish tank maintenance at the Big School. All ongoing projects require funding in the upcoming school year.
We are currently working with Principal Jacobs to help fund some of her priorities for the upcoming year, including a Flexible Seating Pilot Project in many classrooms and her initiative to Build Critical Thinking and Independence in our students.
