Art

Art at the elementary level starts as exploratory and experiential and increases in involvement as the student progresses from Kindergarten to Fifth grade.  Creation is at the core of this instruction.  Students learn to use various tools, processes and media.  The use of proper terminology is emphasized throughout.  Students learn to appreciate the connection of art through history by examining their own work and the work of other people, times and places.

The Kindergarteners and First Grade Students create self-portraits.  We will be learning about still life artwork and reviewing the primary and secondary colors.

First Grade Students will be learning about texture and creating leaf rubbings.

Second Grade Students create crayon resist paintings after studying artist, Paul Klee.  We’ll work on a yarn weaving, creating interesting patterns and learning about the weaving loom.

Third Grade Students create Picasso musicians with the blues.  Students mix many tints and shades of blue after learning about Picasso’s, Blue Period.  Then we’ll learn about landscapes.  We’ll discuss the works of Vincent VanGogh and Henri Rousseau and students will experiment with paint and oil pastels.

Fourth Grade Students create one point perspective drawings, fall dry brush paintings and a paper cut-out kaleidoscope artwork.

Fifth Grade Students study artist, M.C. Escher and his famous tessellations.  We’ll create fantastic tessellations with color pencils and they’ll be on display by the front entrance of the school.  Students learn about Surrealism and discuss the works of artist, Salvador Dali.  Students experiment with surreal drawings and adding collage.
