A Look Ahead In Physical Education

The Middle School Physical Education Program
Students in grades 6-8 receive an average of 150 minutes per week of physical education. The alternating schedule is such that students meet three days one week and two days the next week for 60 minutes each meeting. Sixth grade students spend one quarter of the year in health education and three quarters in physical education. Seventh and eighth grade students have a full year of physical education and receive their health education on a rotation basis.

Physical education instruction in grades 6-8 begins to build upon the application of the elementary themes. Students begin to experience individual and team activities as they relate to sport. There is also a focus on including cooperative activities within the curriculum in order to maintain a non-competitive atmosphere and continues the teamwork approach to student learning. The Presidential Fitness Test is administered twice a year. Dance was introduced to all students in grades 7 and 8 beginning in 2000-2001 and will continue to be incorporated into the physical education curriculum.

The High School Physical Education Program
Students in grades 9-12 receive 150-200 minutes of physical education per week and are required to pass all courses. All students spend one quarter in health and three quarters in physical education.

All ninth grade students receive one quarter each of swimming, cooperative games, team games, and health. The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students have a selective program. Choices range from team and individual activities, Project Adventure, SCUBA, fitness, and dance. Many of the high school students take part in a wide array of activities during their four years while others try to focus on their particular needs. Students also take part in the Presidential Fitness Test twice each year.
