Spanish
Culture is an integral part of learning a world language. When students explore the cultures associated with the Spanish speaking world, they are exposed to the perspectives, practices and products of various societies. Reflection on the cultural aspects of a society gives students the opportunity to gain insight into their own cultures and languages. In addition, when students compare and contrast languages and cultures, cultural knowledge is gained, which in turn promotes understanding and respect for diversity.
The study of another language enhances the students’ overall education in many ways. Second language acquisition develops the skills and habits essential to the learning process. Research suggests that elementary students are particularly receptive to learning languages and exploring cultures. Students who begin the study of other languages at an early age are more likely to acquire language naturally and be more tolerant of differences among cultures. Furthermore, studies have indicated that early language learning promotes overall cognitive growth. Thus, the world language program is student- centered, stressing meaningful interpersonal communication. Students learn to communicate about, understand, and interpret spoken or written Spanish on a variety of topics.

Students will be learning through whole class activities, working in groups and with partners, oral presentations, etc. Students stay motivated and engaged by the use of games, songs, props, and lots of visuals. There will also be some homework assignments and most handouts will consist of a word bank and pictures for students to label in Spanish.
So that students may practice at home, flashcards with pictures of the vocabulary will be sent home as well as a vocabulary study guide. It will be helpful for your child to keep all flashcards in one place so that they may take them out and study whenever they get a chance.
I look forward to working with your child and expect a wonderful year! It is so much fun to bring a new language to children and to be able to share culture and traditions in class everyday. I would like to thank you for your help and support and encourage you to continue supporting our program and your child’s learning. Please help your child by practicing and reinforcing Spanish vocabulary learned in class. Please send me your contact information, child’s name, and classroom, and I will send you the study guides via e-mail.
